Composting Dog Waste: Why It's Not as Simple (or Safe) as You Think

It's a reasonable-sounding idea. You compost food scraps and yard trimmings, so why not pet waste? It's organic material.
The answer involves temperature, and most home setups can't hit it.
The pathogen problem
The parasites and bacteria in dog waste, roundworm eggs especially, are remarkably durable. Neutralizing them requires sustained temperatures around 145ยฐF or higher, maintained consistently throughout the entire pile, not just at the center.
Most home compost piles run cooler and heat unevenly. Material at the edges may never get close. That means finished compost can still contain viable pathogens.
Why that matters practically
If that compost goes on a vegetable garden, you've created a direct contamination route to food you're eating. This is the specific reason virtually every gardening resource advises against composting pet waste in home systems.
What about dedicated pet waste composters?
They exist, and some are legitimate, typically septic-style in-ground digesters that break waste down rather than producing usable compost. That's a meaningfully different thing than what most people mean by composting. The output isn't a soil amendment you'd use in a garden.
They also require ongoing maintenance, appropriate soil drainage, and enzyme additives. In areas with high water tables or heavy clay soil, common in parts of Louisiana, they often don't work well.
What's actually recommended
Bag it and put it in household trash. It's not glamorous, but it's what municipal waste systems are designed to handle, and it's the standard practice for a reason.
