Why Dog Waste Is Classified as an Environmental Pollutant (And Why That Matters for Your Yard)

Most people assume dog waste breaks down like any other organic material. It's natural, it came from an animal, the yard will handle it. That assumption is wrong in a way that matters.
The EPA classifies pet waste as a nonpoint source pollutant, the same broad category as chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and oil runoff. That's not an exaggeration for effect. It's a formal classification, and it exists because of what happens when waste sits on the ground and rain moves it somewhere else.
What's actually in it
A single gram of dog waste can contain millions of fecal coliform bacteria. It also carries nitrogen and phosphorus in concentrations high enough to disrupt the ecosystems they wash into. When rain hits an uncleaned yard, that material doesn't disappear. It moves, into storm drains, into drainage ditches, and eventually into local waterways.
